Reflection
This school year of English, was a difficult, interesting and full of creativity and a life long experience for me. It was the opposite of all my other years of high school English. My teacher Mr. Gallagher was one of the hardest teachers that I have ever had. In fact I think he was the only hardest teacher I ever had. However, He made class interesting and fun to be in. He allowed me to challenge myself and taught me how to bring out my abilities and creativity in my writing skills.
At the beginning of the year I thought I would have this class in my hands but as time went by I thought I was fooling myself. I thought that I was not as talented in writing as I thought I was. I never explicated a novel or image or did blog entries. I loved writing poems and reading novels on my own. But I never hated it when teachers forced me to read because I would be the first one done with the story! I felt as reading was a way for me to escape from my stressful world. But once I started reading novels for Mr. Gallagher, my emotions and concept on reading changed. Reading and writing became more difficult to me. I saw once that I never knew even existed to me or was never in my vocabulary. I felt as though I did not be long in an honor English class. Other kids seemed a lot more smarted than I was. But finally I decided not to focus on other people achievements but to focus more on my abilities and what I had to offer to not only to my class but to myself.
I had a lot of difficulties expressing my self through my writings. I loved to read and to write but I could not keep up with Mr. Gallagher’s standards. So I decided to challenge my self even more. I paid more attention in class and I took more detailed notes. So when I went to go write my essay, it became easier and easier for me with my notes and my guideline for my writing process.
I remember my biggest challenges were writing more than three page essays. I was used to writing three to five paragraphs but I was not used to writing any essay close to four or even ten page essay. I stayed up nights after nights writing and reading quotes and passages and then later on explicating each passage.
I remember when one of the assignments took place when we read the Stranger and had to write a six page essay about comparing two passages and telling how they are alike. I never did this before. I thought to myself that I was going to fail but in fact I got a decent grade. It was not the best but it helped me realize that I could do this and that I should challenge myself even more.
As time went by and each essay page limit increased and increased, my ability to write more professional essays that a college student would write increased. I started to fall in love with English again. Class was more entertaining and more enjoyable now that I had more confidence in myself and my writing.
I want to thank Mr. Gallagher for challenging me and improving my writing ability. You helped me gain confidence in my writing and most of you helped me learn things about myself that I never thought I had or could do. Now I know that I am prepared for school next year. While everyone else in my class next year might struggle with finding their strengths and weaknesses in their writing but I will only be improving my strengths and would know where my weaknesses are. My writing will be better than it already was. So thank you for every thing.

The Stranger Blogspot
I found the discussion on The Stanger quite interesting. I was foud on how everyone's opinion matter even though each person contained a variety of concepts and ideas of translating the message of The Stranger. However i respect and agree with Christine's comment on the similarities of behavior between Meursault and Raymond's personalities. Both share agreession and hatered in core their hearts and soul. This is proven through the passage of Raymond and Mersault disscussion on punishing Raymond's girlfriend. "he asked if i thought she ways cheating on him, and it seemed to me she was, if i thought she should be punished and what i would do in his place, and i said you cant ever be sure, but i understood his wanting to punish her" (page 31).They both agree on revenge against those who dissappoint you and go against your wishes. they both also are emothionaless spirits. this is proven through the following passages " He'd beaten her till she bled. He'd never beaten her before.i'd smack her aorund a little, but nice-like, you might say. she'd scream a litte. I'd close the shutters and it always ended the same way. But this time it's for real. And if you ask me, she still hasn't gotten what she coming."( page 31) and through theni fired four more times at the motionless body where the bullets lodged without leaving a trace. And it was like knocking four quick times on the door of unhappiness" (page59). It's as though even when they accomplish their act of punishing their enemies they fuse for revenge is not completed until thier enemy has lost everything they once cherish, their will to live.

The Perfect Storm Inspired By
I created a booklet that indicates the event of the “Perfect Storm” that took place in October of 1991. The storm is also nicknamed the Halloween Storm. The storm was located in Gloucester, Massachusetts that came from off the coast of Nova Scotia. This storm was later then publicized through writing and a Hollywood movie named the perfect Storm. The storm was created through the energy of three storms that combined to create one enormous storm that would later fall into a historical event. A week before the storm took place a ship named the Andrea Gail left the cost of Gloucester to explore the seas and headed for the fishing grounds off the North Atlantic. Little did the know that 6 of their man wearing sailing in to their death. The Perfect Storm was filmed in 2000 and directed by Wolfgang Peterson and sponsored by Warner Bros. the movie was inspired by the book written by Sebastian Junger and later translated through the words of William D. Wittliff. The concept of the movie was influenced through the lives of those who lived in Gloucester and the tragedy that took place upon their lives. The movie stared the actors and actresses, George Clooney- Captain Billy Tyne, Mark Wahlberg- Bobby Shatford, Diane Lane- Christina Cotter, and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio- Linda Greenlaw. Captain Billy Tyne was the captain of the Andrea Gail. He was a divorced father of two daughters who is determined to make one last fishing trip before the end of the season to make up for a poor catch. He was in desperation for money. Bobby Shatford was the youngest and most inexperienced of the crew. Christina 'Chris' Cotter is the girlfriend of Bobby Shatford. She did not want Bobby to go based on her instincts of fear. Dale Murphy was a veteran fisherman who was divorced who had an on going antagonism with David Sullivan, who signed for the trip on short notice. The film is a true account of the courageous men and women who risk their lives every working day, pitting their fishing boats and rescue vessels against the forces of nature. Through out the booklet I placed pictures that symbolized the characters and the important characterizes that make up Gloucester. On the first page is an image of the movie and the ship going in the waves of the storm. The image indicates the struggling of the ship to survive against the strong currents of the storm. This gives the viewer a visual of how strong the storm was and how powerful it came to the sea. In the booklet I show a map that will indicates the location of Gloucester and the size that it contains. I also give an image of how the storm looked like in a weather reporter. This gives an intense emotion of how much the storm was impacted by its size. I did my research based on the storm and the main characters of those six who died on the Andrea Gail who is also nicknamed the Lady Grace. Gloucester’s culture is influenced through their survival of being a fisher man. Their history contains commercial fishing. This is displayed through the last image of the booklet.

Journal EntrY- The Curious Incident Of The Dog
What's The Story About?
Written by Mark Haddon's , The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night is a murder mystery of fifteen-year-old, Christopher John Francis Boone who is mathematically gifted and socially hopeless and does not believe in the human race. He is being raised by his single father and was abandoned by his mother. However late one night, Christopher comes across his neighbor's poodle, Wellington who was st abed with a garden fork. Wellington's owner finds him cradling her dead dog in his arms, and has him arrested. After spending a night in jail, Christopher wants to discover who has murdered Wellington. He is encouraged by Siobhan, a social worker at his school, to write a book about his investigations. For any one in class that loves to read about mysteries should definitely read this novel.

" 4 Red cars in a row made it a Good Day and 3 red cars in a row made it a quite Good day 5 red cars in a row made it a Super Good Day and why 4 yellows cars in a row made it a Black Day, which is a day when i don't speak to any one and sit on my own reading books and don't eat my lunch and take no ricks"( Hadden 24).
This quote has the description to refer Christopher as a superstitious character. He based the outcome of a day on what colors car that he sees and the amount of each color car that he passes by on the way to school. he compares his theory to why others predict their day based on the wheather in the morning. when the sun is shining it made them feel happy and when they saw that it was raining it made them feel sad. he considers their theory to insane because the wheat her they has a good day or a bad day.

" There wasn't any thing outside the universe and there wasn't another kind of place all together. And if heaven was on the other side of a black hole, dead people would have to be fired in to space on rockets to get there and they aren't or people would notice"( Hadden 32).
Christopher shows less faith in God through this passage. He has no knowledge of God or the heavens. His disbelief in the after life is strange. He thinks that people make up this fiction life based on their fear of dying. They want to carry on living and don't approach the idea of ending life only on the Earth's Surface. He questions the idea of where the after spirits would live and where does God come from. Christopher believes that the only destination that the human race has is being broken down in to molecules of the ground.

" All the other children at my school are stupid. I'm meant to say that they have learning difficulties or that they have special needs. But that is stupid because every one has learning difficulties because learning to speak French or understanding relativity is diffulcult and also everyone has special needs" ( Hadden 43).
Christopher seems as he has high intelligence through this quote. He is caring when it comes to those who attend his special school. He looks at each person as an equal. Every one has special needs even if they are not in a special need class. Each person in the world has a certain characteristic that makes them in a special need category. There are those who need special glasses based on their eyesight. There are also those who need hearing- aids based on their special needs of hearing due to their age or hearing rage.

" Loving someone is helping them when they get in to trouble and looking after them and telling them the truth and father looks after me when i get in to trouble and he looks after me by cooking meals for me and always tell me the truth which mean he loves me" ( Hadden 87).
Even though Christopher doesn't contain many beliefs in the human race, he strongly knows the definition of love. Through this quote, Christopher describes the passionate affectionate relationship that his father and him share. He knows that his father loves him dearly due to his actions and behavior to his son. He knows and understands what happens when someone loves another person. Christopher explains that one must never lie and treat the other with respect.

" People who believe on God thinks God put humans beings on the Earth because they think human beings are the best animal but human beings are just another animal and that animals will be cleaver and it will put human beings into a zoo, like we put Chimpanzees and gorillas into a zoo"( Hadden 165).
Christopher uses this passage to view his thoughts on how humans think they are the best creatures on Earth. However Christopher finds the theory of humans will not last long and they will evolve and they will be put into zoos such as elephants and so on. He insults the intelligence of the human race and their work of mind. He does not think highly of them, rather more a disgrace.

On Demand Writing
In the quote " Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising every time we fall." spoken by Confucius the idea illustrates ambition and courage of strength. its stating that even though one may reach their destination of accomplishment, its not the result of their success however its the progress of their effort to reach their destination. Even though one may not experience the feeling of success but they will receive the priceless gift of respectful.
My experience of being in foster care is being illustrated through this quote. I have gone through events that have brought me to unsuccessful achievements. I begin to fail in a social life and my academics status was low. others begin to wonder if i would become a success in life. once i began to get my act together, my success begin to increased. i was less stressed and full of happiness. i put in more effort and less laziness. my attitude changed in to a more positive rather than a negative perceptive on life. Being in foster care, others assume that I'm a problem child however because of my situation. i am equally or more successful than a "normal" child.
One's success is reflected through the steps and effort that they choose to make. even though one might fall into a situation that they may become discourage, they should at least try yo put the puzzle pieces back together. a person should try to overcome their circumstances rather than to give up without a try.
There will always be competition in the real world. One can have advantages over another. However, it is up to the disadvantage to strive to achieve their goals. The importance is not the outcome of the success but the courage and dignity that one contains throughout the progress over another however its the attitude and potential that will gain the respect of others.

The Courage of an Orphan
What does the word foster means to a person? One may think of caring, support or providing care towards another. Then there are those who think of abuse, violence, discourage and trouble. Are there those who take the time to find the true meaning? Foster (verb)-Help develop, help grow; "nurture his talents" 2. Bring up under fosterage; of children 3. Providing or receiving nurture or parental care though not related by blood or legal ties. There is no true meaning to the word foster care. There is a true meaning to those who experience being in foster care and to those who provide the shelter to the unfortunate. When one chooses to listen to those who have the knowledge of foster care being a part of their life, they are then given an opportunity to see and understanding the emotions of how a child in such a position is forced to deal with prejudice, abusive relations and broken dreams that can result to overcoming the downfall of their childhood. The level of neglect and abuse is ranged differ upon the dependence of the background of the child. One might assume that all those who are placed in such circumstances are automatically being punished based on bad behavior but are ignorant to the fact that there are those who are placed in foster care due to the loss of a parent or their family members are unable to provide for their care any longer.
I lost both parents by the age 7 years old due to HIV. My mother was a committed full time nurse while taking care of four kids. Things between my father and her worsen throughout the years. Their relationship on love became blinded by violence. My father then created a secret life of affairs with other women. He formed into a womanizer and was never there for his stepchildren nor his biological daughters. He was later then was diagnosed with the disease of HIV but refused to let my mother know. The disease was then transferred in to my mother’s blood stream causing her to become ill. Doctors lacked knowledge of the disease during the early 1990’s and assumed she had cancer rather then AIDS. They decided to treat her with Keemo therapy but it worsted her health. She then decided she would avoid medication and let the Lord and Jesus Christ with the Holy Spirit decide her fate. Her death came upon us drastically in the following year.
My father became ill due to the HIV overwhelming his body. He was in and out of the hospital and never was there to see how my grandmother acted. He was blinded by abuela’s sweetness when he was around. After awhile my father finally caught on to my grandmother’s play games and decided to move my sister and me with my mother’s sister who lived in Medford. It was a new environment. I didn’t realize who she was due to the fact that my father never spoke of those in my mother’s family. My father and my mother’s family never related to each other. They spoke of harsh words about another. My mother’s family blamed my father for mommy’s death. Daddy knew it was his time to go and would be happier to leave my sister and me with my aunt rather then my abuela.
During the next years, my father came to visit us during the weekends. He would take us shopping. One day Daddy and my Tio (uncle) took us to the corner store and I asked Daddy if he could get me a doll but he told me that he didn’t have the money today and we could come back for another time. I acted like a selfish little bitch and cried and told him that he was the worst father ever. I told him that I hated. The look on my father’s face was a face that I would never forget. His eyes reflected pain and misery. He told me that it was okay and he still loved me with all his heart and spirit and hug me like he didn’t want to let me go. That was the last time I ever saw my father.
After my father’s death, I was being neglected by the only family I thought I had left in my life. I had to make life choices based on what I would like to accomplish later in life as well as in the present. I had to see how the present would reflect in the future. I always knew what I wanted in life and I would never let anyone tell me other wise. Being in foster care people would think of me as “lower class”. To me I viewed it as my chance to go to college. Being in care, it allowed me to have a “free” education. Choosing to entering Salem State would be a step closer to proving me to others and to my self. Most of all it would make my parents smile while looking at me from the heavens above.
The next years were hard living with out Daddy. My aunt became abusive with my sister and me. She was bitter and told my sister and I that we were not our mother’s children, we were our father’s children. She would make my sister do chores and yell at us. I couldn’t find any explanation to why she had so much hatred toward us. What did Daddy do so bad to make her take her anger out on us? Was I good enough to love as a daughter? What was the matter with me? Why weren’t Daddy and Mommy here to love me? Why all the other children had a Mommy and Daddy and not me? All these questions were never answered.
When my sister turned 16 she decided to move with my uncle for a year in New Hampshire I was then abandoned there to live with my aunt. Her behaviors worsen with the emotional abuse. I decided to live with my long time best friend, Donielle. Her mother loved me like her own. My aunt became upset and decided to call DSS. The court would not let me stay with them. I was forced into the system of the government. I was terrified. I didn’t know what to expect. I was now going to live with complete strangers.
The first time I met my first foster mom, I was nervous but happy. She lived in Malden with her two daughters. I was going to finally have a mommy in my life. I was over whelmed with joy. I met new friends and started a new life. I still kept in contact with Donielle and her mother. I continued to live with her for the next two and half years. We developed a strong bond between each other. She became more then a mother to me but my best friend. I thought it was too good to be true. So I started to rebel. In my mind I knew that this family wasn’t my own and sooner or later they would abandon me or reject me like everyone else in my life has. So I decided to leave.
My social worker then decided to move me to another foster home with a younger woman but free spirited, generous person that I ever met in my life. I was now 17. My life changed drastically during the years. I have lost so much but at the same, gained more then others. I didn’t have parents but I had a good support system. My social worker became like an older sister to me. We had an emotional, loving relationship like no other relationship between a client and a social worker. I love her dearly. Franchesca, my other social worker, helped me with schooling and finically.
There are those who discover their true talents once they believe that they can achieve their goals in life. Everything I have been through came from the Lord above. He was challenging my strength and courage. He made me wiser and stronger so I will be able to beat any other challenges that are thrown in my way. Yes I have flaws and find difficulties in accomplishing certain task that others may do better than me but I found other things I have accomplished. I survived four years of foster care and I have thrive through the loss of my parents and I’ve achieved through school with Honors and College Prep classes and I’m not pregnant and I’m working two jobs. These are things that not even some 40 year olds can handle. I put my mind, spirit and energy into everything that I do and will not allow any one come in between my path of achieving my goals of going to school.
Throughout the years, I had lost and found new people that had their influenced on me. Some had stronger impact on me then others did. Each I shared moments of fighting, laughter and dreams. Now I work at a day care with a co-worker, Kristin, who I love and cherish. I love each child that I work with and hope to become a child-psychologist. I have two best friends Judith and Shayra who gave me advice and courage to pull through each day with a smile on my face. Shayra’s Dad, Robert (I nicknamed Papados- second Dad) became my only father figure in my life. I was able to speak to him about anything. I have reconnected with my sister and brothers and love them with all my might. I am now a senior at Malden High School and have big dreams. I want to make my parents happy and be proud to call me their daughter.
There are a variety of people in this world who are struggling to find their identity and their purpose to their being on earth. My self confidence and self- esteem are being challenged through the success of my accomplishments and down falls of life. Yes I have faced losing my parents and being in foster care and losing family members but I have gained so much more. My future has become my present. My present has become my past. My past has become a part of me. The beautiful and the ugly of the world have taught me life lessons of trusting and finding the true me. I have reconnected with my biological family and developed a special bond between each member. I love them endlessly. I have found new friends that have become a part of my family and I will always treasure their memories. I’m gathering images all of my life and storing them away without forgetting them. I continue to send myself back to open the memories and seeing what they have to offer me. It’s a display of a collection of my elements. Coming to a point where I reconnect hoping to remind myself of the person
So what does the word foster mean? It has a variety of meanings. It’s a symbol to reflect that it’s only up to me to decide my destiny. No one can decide to live for me and I can’t live for any one else.

Protrait Of An Artist As A Young Man
Feminism composes a number of social, cultural and political movements, theories and moral philosophies concerned with gender inequalities and equal rights for women. Feminist theory aims to understand gender inequality and focuses on gender politics, power relations, and sexuality. Women’s writing developed in response to the belief that woman’s lives and contributions to society have been unappreciated by men as areas of scholarly interest. Feminist language is “Semitic” not “Symbolic” blends in with the relation between a mother and a child. This theory is illustrated through out the novel A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. The main character Stephen struggles with identifying women as being a sex symbol rather then an individual and struggles with understanding the relationship between women and the Catholic Church. Stephen struggles to decide whether he should be loyal to his family, his church, his culture of Ireland and his involvement between him self with females and transform his personality in to being an artist.
Stephen values women as a sex symbol and considers them as virgins or strumpets. He fantasizes about Mercedes and other women to repress his emotions and longings to be with his mother. He uses women to escape into a fantasized world in order to prevent him self from sinning through sexual intercourse psychically but not mentally. He begins to isolate from other women due to the power that women portray over him. This case study is proven in the article of The Bird-Girl: Aesthetic Muse when it state…..
In sociological terms this attractive young women, approached and courted, might well threaten Stephen with the kind of domestic entrapment associated with Catholic marriage. The aspiring poet knows that he may look but not touch, admire but not speak (319).
Stephen does not want to commit sexually contact with them but feels as though he’s bringing shame on to their name by daydreaming about these women in a sexual manner. However, Stephen is some how dawn back to these women for comfort and warmth. When Stephen’s friend, Davin, speaks of his encounter between him and the prostitute who was home alone, Stephen seems to have sympathy for the women.
She was half undressed as if she was going to bed when I knocked and she had her hair hanging: and I thought by her figure and by something in the look of her eyes that she must be carrying a child. She kept me in a talk a long while at the door and I thought it strange because her breast and her shoulders were bare. She asked me was I tired and would I like to stop the night there. She said she was all alone in the house and that her husband had gone that morning to Queenstown with his sister to see her off. And all the time she was talking, Stevie, she had her eyes fixed on my face and she stood so close to me I could hear her breathing. When I handed her back the mug at last she took my hand to draw mw in over the threshold and said: Come in and stay the night here. You’ve no call to be frightened. There’s no-one in it but ourselves….. I didn’t go in, Stevie. I thanked her and went on my way again, all in a fever. At the first bend of the road I look back and she was standing in the door. The last words of Davin’s story sang in his memory and the figure of the woman in the story stood forth reflected in to her figures of the peasant women whom he had seen standing in the doorways at Clane as the college cars drove by, as type of her race and his own, a bat like soul walking to the consciousness of itself in darkness and secrecy and loneliness and, through the eyes and voice and gesture of a women without guile, calling the stranger to her bed (Joyce 160).
Through out this passage the reader can see how Stephen relates and understands the emotions of the women that are the college boys interact with. Each women and Stephen have similar traits that combine them. Stephen uses these women to fulfill in the void of loneliness with out the affectionate of his mother mean while the women fill in the void of unhappiness while their husbands are a way due to working to provide for their family. So therefore it’s as if their fulfilling each others missing parts of their souls. At the end of the message it seems as if Stephen is forming a passionate connection with these women that are committing adultery. It’s as if he wanted to be with his own kind.
Stephen, as a young boy is transforming in to adulthood. He demonstrates the stages that Stephen goes through by symbolizing and through imagery and reflects Stephen’s growth through his structured, description sentences that share the concepts of Stephen thoughts and values on life. Joyce’s purpose of the passages is to conceive the reader’s attention on how the character is changing and why he chooses to change his ways. In the beginning of the book Stephen portrays himself as being immature and still a child who is having difficultly in developing his own personality but as time goes on he matures and develops a mature, adult personality and wishes that he wasn’t so young minded. From theses two massages, James Joyce demonstrates the phases of growth between Stephen’s yearly childhood and now entering puberty and adulthood.
In the beginning of the first stages of Stephen’s growth, He is portrayed to being immature and childish when showing passionate emotions towards his mother. His classmates make fun of Stephen when he confesses to them that he does kiss his mother. He then tells them that he does not kiss his mother. However either direction of answers, he is denied of acceptance and is considered a laugh.
-Tell us, Dedalus, do you kiss your mother every night before you go to bed?Stephen answered:-I do.
Wells turned to the other fellows and said:
- O, I say, here’s a fellow says he kisses his mother every night before he goes to bed.
The other fellow says he kisses his, mother every night before he goes to bed.
The other fellows stopped their game and turned round, laughing.
Stephen blushed under their eyes and said: - I do not.
Wells said:
-O, I say, here’s a fellow says he doesn’t kiss his mother before he goes to bed.
They all laughed again. Stephen tried to laugh with them. He felt his whole body hot and confused in a moment. What was the right answer to the question? He had given two and still Wells laughed. But Wells must know the right answer for he was in third of grammar…..He still tried to think what was the right answer. Was it right to kiss his mother or wrong to kiss his mother? What did that mean to kiss? You put your face up like that to say goodnight and then his mother put her face down. That was the kiss. His mother put her lips on his cheek; her lips were soft and they wetted his cheek; and they made a tiny little noise: kiss. Why did people do that with their two faces? (25-26).
The purpose of the passage is to declare how immature that Stephen was. He was going through the immature phase of trying to impress his friends by denying his affections towards his mother. He was in a puzzle and was confused. What was the right way? Should he tell his friends that he does or doesn’t kiss his mother? He allows his friends to influence his emotions and his decisions. He contains no reflection of his own thought of mind about what is right or wrong. He only values what his friends think rather then to contain his own value of life. He struggles to find the meaning of saying goodnight to his mother and giving her kiss after. He questions himself with if it was right to kiss his mother. Why did the other kids laughed at both responses? He was caught in the moment and wanted to laugh as well but found himself blushing as a child would when they had an accident. He could not find why Wells laughed at him twice. In this passage the reader can find Stephen still caught in the early phase of struggling in finding his identity and caring what others think of his actions. Joyce gives Stephen the portrait of an innocent little boy caught in between making the right choice without the influence of his heart but more of his friend’s reactions to his decision making. This declares how psychologist Freud, states how marrying your mother is an unconscious thought is in all males and this is proven through the thought of mind that Stephen contains when he images himself kissing his mother every night when telling her goodnight.
As time goes by Stephen escapes the earlier phase of childhood and being embarrassed by his friends and does not run away from showing his emotions any more as he enters the phase of adulthood. He deals with his forever changing emotions. He is opening his eyes to the outer world and is noticing more of his surrounding more then ever. He does not deny expressing his emotions as he has done in his previous experiences. He now contains traits of adulthood.
For some time he had felt the slight changes in his house; and these changes in what he had deemed unchangeable were so many slight shocks to his boyish conception of the world. The ambition which he felt astir at times in the darkness of his soul sought no outlet. A dusk like that of the outer world obscured his mind as he heard the mare’s hoofs clattering along the tram track on the Rock Road and the great can swaying and rattling behind him…..He returned to Mercedes and, so he brooded upon her image, a strange unrest crept into his blood upon her image; a strange unrest crept into his blood. Sometimes a fever gathered within him and led him to rove alone in the evening along the quiet avenue. The peace of the gardens and the kindly lights in the windows poured a tender influence into his restless heart. The noise of children at play annoyed him and their silly voices made him feel even more keenly than he felt at Clongowes, that he was different from others. He did not want to play. He wanted to meet in the real world the unsubstantial image which his soul so constantly beheld. He did not know where to seek at or how: but a premonition which led him non told him that this image would, without any overt act of his, encounter him. They would meet quietly as if they had known each other and had made their tryst, perhaps at one of the gates or in some more secret place. They would be alone, surrounded by darkness and silence: and in the moment of supreme tenderness he would be transfigured. He would fade into something impalpable under her eyes and then, in a moment, he would be transfigured. Weakness and timidity and inexperience would fall from him in that magic moment (66-67).
He is now acknowledging the changes that his mind and body are experiencing. He is transferring into adulthood physically and mentally. In the beginning of the passage he is starting to leave his boyish traits behind and developing new mature trait. He is realizing that his hormones are controlling state of mind when he thinks of Mercedes. His body rises in temperature and his hearts beats faster. He is now allowing himself to be opened minded with his emotion even though before he was embarrassed by his friends and kept his feelings conceal. Before he was afraid to unmask himself but now he shows his reflection as a mature adult. In the middle of the passage he found himself denying the voices of the children and refuses to be playful land foolish like the children. Instead he wants to release his soul into the real world but does not know how to. The passage ends with him telling himself that one day his split personality of his child traits and adulthood traits will collide and will transfer him into one but all this will happen in the eyes of Mercedes. His portrait now contains the traits of a child finding his inner meaning to his emotions and allowing himself to transfer into the early stages of adulthood without being ashamed of whom he will become.
His mother was unable to protect him from the society of men and their controlling the world in a male’s perspective rather than a female’s perceptive. As a younger boy Mary Dedalus was able to comfort and hid Stephen from the cruel world but as he is developing in to his own skin, she is then unable to furnish him with love, tender and care. This case is evidential in the article Mother and Child when it states…..
When Stephen returns to Clongowes, he realizes that his peacemaking mother, a mollifying agent of social arbitration, has failed to offer a viable sanctuary from the male- dominated power structure that controls the outer world. He must learn to survive in a society that protects bullies like Wells and sadists like Father Dolan, condones brutality, and takes advantage of the weak and the helpless….. According to Slater, single-sex education and the separation of young boys from maternal nurturance promotes misogyny, narcissism, and a residual terror of the female. Little boys suffer from an “unconscious fear of being feminine, which leads to ‘protest masculinity,’ exaggeration of the difference between men and women” (Slater 416). Once the child is deprived of his mother’s affection, he “seeks compensation through self-aggrandizement- renouncing love for admiration….he becomes vain, hypersensitive, invidious, ambitious…boastful, and exhibitionistic (439) (311).
In these passages the reader can see how Stephen’s experiences provoke him to increase his growth and allow his self image portrait to transform from his childhood into adulthood. This is proven through his train of thought and how he illustrates his surroundings around him and releases his soul, mind, and spirit into the real world without the guidance of his mother and searches for the comfortnance of other women that resembles his mother and struggles with identifying with balancing of his masculine and feminine side. He releases the need of desire for his mother through his relationship with other females.
He then uses art to express and symbolize his sexuality and his desire as women use their writing to relate to their emotions. His art is similar to his life mean while women interpret their views on life through their writings. Art is Stephen’s unconscious and conscious form of sexuality.
Inspired by his vision on the beach, Stephen devotes himself to art and begins to formulate his system of aesthetics. These theories fashion art into a means of protection and a means of escape from entrapment by the past and by crippling fixations. Stephen is anxious to prove that art can be isolated from intense personal feelings. To this compulsive end he seizes on Aquinas’s statement that art satisfies the mind, not the body, and expands it into his idea of stasis (263).
Stephen is using art as a mirror reflection of his sexuality and how he perceives women in society. He thinks of women as virgins or strumpet due to what society has taught him to view women as lower class. This is similar to how males view women’s writings. Women contain the ability to write with their emotions but a man writing is with a straight forward goal.
Kristeva, who associates feminine writing with the female body, is joined in her views by other leading French feminists. Helene Cixous, for instance, also posits an essential connection between the woman’s body, whose sexual pleasure has been repressed and denied expression, and women’s writing. “Write your self. Your body must be heard,” Cixous urges; once they learn to write their bodies, women will not only realize their sexuality but enter history and move toward a future based on a feminine economy of giving rather than the masculine economy of hoarding (Cixous 250). For Luce Irigaray, women’s sexual pleasure cannot be expressed by the dominant, ordered, “logical”, masculine language. She explores the connection between women’s sexuality and women’s language through the following analogy: as women jouissance is more multiple than men’s unitary, phallic pleasure (“woman has sex organs just about everywhere”), so “feminine” language is more diffusive than its masculine counter part. (“that is undoubtedly the reason… her language…goes off in all directions and… hi unable to discern the cohence, Irigaray writes [101-03]. (297)
Women all have their own style of writing but men have one main shared idea to get across the reader. Feminine language is “semiotic” not “symbolic” blends in with the relationship between a mother and a child. Men focus on one thing in life and language and sex while women focus on many things, reflecting the males’ one sexual organ to the women’s many organs of their body parts. This perceptive reflects how Stephen visions women as being all over the place and he is intimated by the power that women are engaging and hides from his fear through his art work.
When at a young age, Stephen had the guidance of his mother and people around him. However, as he got older he begins to be overwhelmed with confusion. He was confused between the church and women because he had never experience those influences before during his early childhood. As time went on he learned to express his sexuality and emotions through art. Before he must become a true artist he must go through the stage of gestation, the process of something forming into some thing else.
Images Of In A Mirror
I'm gathering images all of my life,
Storing them away in my heart and never to forget them
but i continue to send myself back
to open the memories and seeing what they have to offer.
A recollection of my elements.
Coming to a point to remind myself of the person I've become.
My past, my life, My passion and desires
The people I've known to love or to ignore
The ones that made a difference and I will always cherish
My joys and sorrows
All make me into the person that I am today.
